Hi there, folks! I wanted to share at least one more post with you THIS YEAR: Before I went off for Christmas and Family, I witnessed the FINAL EDIT of the legendary omega movie project right in front of my eyes!

Whereas my break from the project seems to haunt me with a fever and other annoyances, our sound artist Lorenz Schwarz is diligently finishing up the soundscape and – finally- making the music for the film. At least he promised.

We are so excited to watch OMEGA as a complete film when we return to make the final polish and rendering, mastering, and so on.
I wish a wonderful, even better New Year to you all!

Blender Conference!

As the movie is more or less entering the final final final stage of production, this sunday we’ll also be giving a talk at the 10th annual Blender Conference in Amsterdam, covering more specifically the use of blender in Omega. We’ll try to give a sneak peak of the (blender) progress in the past couple of months. It’s amazing to see the movie coming together after 3 years of work!

A quick Blender Compositing Screencast

This is a short screencast of myself constructing a basic matte painted shot within Blender 2.5. It starts with a basic layout and geometry and ends with a semi-final composite. The mattes were rendered in Blender and retouched in Photoshop in 16bit OpenEXR.

The Blender Institute Renderfarm renders OMEGA

We’re so fortunate to be able to use the renderpower of the Blender Institute. Currently 4x dual Xeon server nodes, 2x dual Xeon workstations, 2x I7 Workstations and a couple of dual / quad core computers are hooked up to the farm. In this video Ton Roosendaal shows us its highly advanced cooling system.

Dear world!

We are making progress, making progress. Even with Andy taking a break for giving a Blender workshop last week, the scenes are coming together: backgrounds, lights, effects, 3d elemtents, puffs and stuffs- and looking good, looking awseome! Just wanted to let you know that we are working hard!

Of course, the fun with those never ending details still awaits us- but we will not be waiting long!

Omega NOW!

Believe it or not: Omega has entered the final phase of production!

During the last weeks we finished the stop-motion animation and prepared the OMEGA installation for the exhibition at Kunsthalle Bonn.

Now we are finally free to entirely concentrate on the 3D part as well as the final compositing of the scenes. Parallely the sound is being created by Lorenz Schwarz and his helpers. Me so happy. Can’t wait to see (and hear) it done!

this post is looong overdue! recently, the first final frames of the movie have been dropping in – here are some of them to give you a small taste. not all of them are finished – characters are missing, the colors aren’t final, etc. however, i’m very excited to finally see the work of months (years, really) coming together!

all these have been composited together in blender 2.5.
the models are shot with Canon Eos 500D and 5D Mark II digital SLR cameras
the mountains are plastic bags
the clouds are cotton
none of this would be possible with the work of our awesome team (they all do this in their free time), kudos to all of them!

Korean Television at Omega

Hi,

Big sensation at Omega! Some korean television guys were here in our holy halls of the HfG and spontaneously decided to take an interview with Andy and Juan aka Pachi about our OMEGA-Project. Eva didn’t want to be interviewed, because of her …. accent, … or of her mood? I don’t know.

Well anyway, here are the glorious moments banned on digital celluloid.

Ohm Evolution

Hi there!

below you can see some photos of our main character’s – the ohm – progress from beginning to end. At its core is a metal/wood armature with brass joints. The arms and body tentacles are aluminum wire, which can be replaced if necessary and coated with liquid latex. As a final step, everything has been painted and drybrushed with acrylics. The ohm can be tightened to the set with screws.
